| After you have decided that your principal motivation is to collect art for capital gain then we need to correlate the artist's reputation and style with the art you would like to own. To do this we will: - review Australian art with our portfolio of art books. - determine the type of artwork you prefer: artists, styles, periods. - illustrate to you why one artwork is more 'collectable' than another. - realistically assess the 'holding period' of an artwork. To assess the artwork's 'investment potential', we will study past sales for similar work by that artist to assess their price movement historically. We will also note trends and fashion and then identify the durable. At this point we may seek the market place for those artworks which we have identified as good targets - worthy of collecting. Each artwork will be scrutinized for its potential, both as 'collectable' and resaleable. The latter is essential to an investment portfolio. We only recommend artists of reputation. An artwork is then assessed for its potential to increase in value, based on its quality and rarity and the recent market response to it. As each artwork is added to your collection it is 'recorded for review' - i.e. periodically the art will be assessed in the light of market movements and decisions to buy or sell will be made. We suggest that clients be aware of upgrading their artworks. It pays to be conscious of shaping the collection and seeking better quality at all times. Reviewing an art collection regularly is vital. An open mind for opportunities to buy, sell or move when the market suggests is therefore important. Finally, we consider the best method of purchase, whether it be buying through a superannuation fund, a company, or personally, and what tax savings are available.
