Artist Statement

I have been regularly creating works of art since I was a small child. My art practice became more serious when I began formal training at the age of 16. This continued through to university where I studied both sculpture and drawing. During my final year of study I began making wearable art from metal and rubbish. Upon completing my degree in Fine Art I then went on to complete a traineeship in Clothing Production (dress making) so I could better understand how to construct my wearable art works.

From 2000 until 2004 I worked outside of the arts industry but came back to it in 2005. In 2005 I began painting and also designed a series of cartoon characters which I had printed on clothing. I sold my clothes through some stores in Brisbane, Qld, in Bellingen, NSW and at market stalls. At this time until the present day I have painted or drawn almost every day working at finding my own style and what is important to me to convey in my artwork.

As I have grown up in rural areas nature is a very important part of my life and thus I want to convey the beauty of nature in my work. Also important in my art is the use of vibrant colour and a stylised simplistic representation of my ideas. More recently I am finding a need to weave a narrative into my work and to have a sense of quirkiness as well.

I create art because it is an extension of who I am. It allows me to express myself, feel peaceful and feel a deep satisfaction in creating beautiful images.
