Biography
1983 - 1986
• Born 28/12/1983 in Newcastle, New South Wales Australia and lived in Hamilton for most of his life.
• From an early age James was infatuated with drawing.
1987- 1990
• He discovered painting at pre school.
• At six his Auntie started to teach him more about making art. She was a profound influence all the way through his life.
• When James was just seven he was enrolled in after school art classes at Ron Hartree Art School. He continued painting and drawing classes at Ron Hartree Art School all the way through.
1991
• At eight, James was Invited to attend the Saturday afternoon adult painting classes.
• Discovered Australian and French Impressionists
• Invited to attend life drawing classes at Ron Hartree Art School
• James began dragging his mother to Art Galleries and taking trips to National Gallery NSW and National Gallery Canberra when he was only eight
• It was around this time when he discovered Australian painters; Russell Drysdale, William Dobel, Fred Williams, Albert Tucker, Arthur Boyd, Judy Cassab, Grace Cossington Smith, Charles Blackman
1992
• At nine he met Australian Landscape artist David Middlebrook
• James discovers Brett Whitely and the possibility of abstraction
• Sets up parents garage as a studio
• Sells first painting
1992
• At ten he meets Australian Portrait and Landscape Artist Judy Cassab
• First Exhibition in School library of figure drawings and Landscape
1994
• At twelve he enters small Art exhibition and Art prizes in surrounding Newcastle
1995
• Starts high school
• Discovers Guitar
• Develops love of Whitely
• Is nurtured by High School Art Teacher Ellyn Davies
1995 -1996
• Paints a mural in the Art Room (8m X 3m)
• Starts Landscape painting En Plein Air with David Middlebrook
1997
• Teacher Ellyn Davies recognises James' potential and need for further Art development. So the school allows him to spend one day out of School a week to attend an all day Adult Painting class at Ron Hartree Art School
• Starts senior School and meets his new art teacher Penny Buckley who further nurtures and challenges James
• Starts selling work; seascapes, portraits, and doing commissions
• Embarks on disturbing expressive body of work including seascape and portraits
• It was around this time when he discovers Art can be ugly
1998
• Finishes body of work for HSC (final year of high school) and gains full marks
• His Art teacher, Penny Buckley gets James to apply for the National Art School, Darlinghurst, Sydney
• He gets accepted into the National Art School of Sydney based on Drawing test and portfolio
19 - 23
• Leaves Art School
• Has first one man exhibition in Newcastle of abstract colour fields (refer to Exhibitions, Previous Exhibitions for all the exhibitions he's had to date)
2006
• James moved to Melbourne when he was 23 to pursue Art and Music
Now
• He is still exhibiting in NSW and is busy building a body of work to have an exhibition to build his name in Melbourne
• He has recently moved into a large studio with his Fiance, Lottie (Artist), and has made a significant commitment to his work. James and Lottie have now prioritised and structured their lives to give them the time their passions need
