Born Newcastle, NSW, 1955
Without doubt, JOHN EARLE has become one of Newcastle's favourite sons. His accurately observed familiar local landscapes, flooded with brilliant light, are a favourite amongst collectors. Not only does he enjoy acclaim in his native city, but he has the tacit approval of more cosmopolitan and critical sources in his inclusion in the Wynne Prize Exhibition on several occasions.
The stretch of coastline from Bar Beach to Merewether, Cowrie Hole, Newcastle Beach and the Bogey Hole all fall under the artist's observant eye and are well-served by his brush. Attention to minute detail and geographical accuracy are trademarks of Earle's style. This, of course, is the style with which most are acquainted, but Earle is also an accomplished Surrealist painter. Intriguing surrealist images reveal the fascinating alter ego of the artist.
