JANE PARKES explores the stuff of dreams. Her world is one of fantasy, of the story book. The paintings are small but rich in astonishing detail (which is all done with the finest of brushes). Like actors in wonderful dramas, sailors, musicians, jesters and the like play out their stories on a flat stage in settings that are as decorative as their costumes.

"The paintings I do are described by some as naive, which seems apt as the images are styalized and lie flatly on the page. To counteract these simple forms I spend many hours detailing the clothing and surrounds. This is where the enjoyment lies.

I like to think of these paintings as jewel-like and fantastical. I get pleasure from the viewer looking closely then even closer at the painting in order to see all of the fine detail and patterning which is all done with the finest of brushes. I guess it's the detail that makes these paintings special.

This particular style of work began at school when I created a 10 page book of childrens pictures for one of my HSC major works. At this time I was taught art by Sue Paton at St Francis Xavier's College.

My dream is to illustrate a children's book and/or have my paintings made into cards. Recently I have enjoyed painting a picture of a friend's family with special features involved which relate just to them."
