As is his custom, DAVID PERKS celebrates light in this collection of recent work.
The light in this painted world however, is never harsh and unkind, but muted and evocative. Perks draws on every viewer's nostalgia for that special experience of a shimmering dawn, a dazzling clear morning, a hazy afternoon or the most sultry of dusks, and locks it onto the canvas. The experience is thereby preserved forever.
A widely acknowledged control of colour values enables Perks to create atmospheric vistas which are entirely convincing. While this exhibition includes some monumental paintings of Australia's far northern landmarks, Newcastle features prominently.

Light is the main protagonist in David Perks' painted dramas: muted light and reflection on water, whether it be coastal, sea and surf, the mysteries and moods of Newcastle Harbour or dew drops on long grass out in the country.
Perks reaches out to viewers and invites them to enjoy an atmosphere which they have no doubt so often beheld in life and bemoaned not being able to preserve forever. The dazzling light of dawn, the clear light of morning, the bright but hazy light of afternoon and the sultry light of dusk, these are the subjects which dominate any collection of paintings by this artist.
Recognised as a painter's painter, Perks' work reminds other artists just what is possible with paint. His masterly control of colour hues allows light to shine and water to be wet. Perks' work lifts the spirit and fires the emotions.

He explained recently:
"In 1970, while still a commercial artist in Sydney, I took a few days away sketching. My first stop was Newcastle. I then saw the great painting potential of Newcastle with its maritime activity on the harbour; Nobbys; the beaches right there in the city - full of fascination for an artist. That fascination has not diminished over the years. Like most people I'm drawn to the 'warm glow' of the familiar and Newcastle has indeed become familiar to me."
