Although English born and educated, Sheila White's sense of colour owes little to a European heritage. The artist would readily agree and with good reason. At 26 years of age, she left Europe and lived in Africa for 15 years It was not until she arrived in Sydney in 1968 that she first began painting. Antipodean light was the catalyst and White therefore considers herself an Australian artist. Since embarking on this career, White has devoted herself to the study and practice of painting full-time. She has re-established her links with Europe and study tours of European art galleries serve to stimulate, challenge and extend her artistic vocabulary.

With the same confidence that she tackles a broad range of subject matter, Sheila White explores various media, including oil, watercolour, pastel and collage. Experiment is not so much a choice but a necessity. Each work becomes a new experience. Her only concession to the idea of a theme is to develop a particular subject by simplifying and abstracting it within a group of three of four paintings.

The common element in the work is the unanimous celebration of pure, saturated hues. Viewing her work is an experience of immense visual pleasure. Amongst the landscapes and seascapes of Salamander Bay and of Durras near Batehaven on the South Coast, there are the splendid still-life compositions for which White has achieved considerable reputation.
