Artist Statement.
My subject matter endows the artist with the ability to alter the light, colour, shape, form and composition to a point of paintability. I enjoy the manner in which light and dark envelop the subjects, which often become partially hidden, creating an air of mystery. The positioning of objects in controlled lighting situations renders them as removed from reality, yet recognisable from everyday observations.
Although influenced by studies of the Old Masters I work in a contemporary manner, rather than a realistic rendition of the subject, I draw on a wide heritage of art history. The shape, placement, gradations of tone with strong splashes of light & shadow become important.
The brighter days of summer inspire much lighter canvases using the natural light available, the gloomier days of winter result in the usage of lamplight, more of a stage setting and usually strong shadowing.
This exhibition moves through four seasons of work, the lighter summer canvases tending towards more of a surprise element in subject and composition.
