Artist Statement
Watercolour has a mind of its own; it's more about what is suggests active versus passive or density versus translucency. In these paintings as with most of my work there are hard and soft edges, some details left out hoping the viewer will be drawn in and fill in the blanks and in doing so have their imagination become part of the painting.
I confess that my own methods are slightly unorthodox, I don't draw the image in pencil and then fill in the colour, I splash lots of water on the paper then add colour and try to control the image, often ending up with a muddy mess which is ripped up. But sometimes what is in my head ends up as a painting.

These days most of my work is done in my old church which is also my studio, gleaned from notes, drawings, photographs and imagination, the latter being treated very freely. It is a very private activity and I don't like talking about it and hope the paintings are their own advocate.
As for inspiration, it's all around us, we just have to look and listen.
Living and working in this old church isn't easy and I am still waiting for divine intervention but it hasn't happened yet. Since my next career move is 'dead', it probably never will.
However, I shall continue to struggle with the mystery that is Watercolour.
