John Earle is a professional local artist, his accolades being in a survey exhibition at the Newcastle Region Gallery some 5 years ago. He’s been selected to hang in the Wynne Prize AGNSW in past years.

He is a recognised artist from the Hunter region.

John travels to pursue his interest in surfing different waves which led him to Vanuatu.

Paul was a local artist until the early 1990’s living on the ‘The Hill’ where he became fascinated with the ship movements and activity on Newcastle Harbour. He painted in the 1980’s with a very tonal palette. Locally he was known for the Newcastle city shadow murals and being a full time artist of Newcastle. He studied art with John Earle, a cohort from Art School days.

In 2007 Paul’s art was selected for the AGNSW Wynne prize being short listed for the prize, His artwork since has been keenly sought and he has now cemented his reputation amongst collectors.

If you don’t have the funds for an original oil, this graphic is as good as it gets to buy an image so recognizable as Olley.

John Earle is a professional local artist his accolades being a survey exhibition at the Newcastle Region Gallery some 5 years ago, selected to hang in the Wynne Prize AGNSW in past years.

He is a recognised artist from the Hunter region.

There is some paint crazing on this work, which I have discussed with the artist who advises me this is typical of this period of painting. He can restore it subject to viewing. A work of his of this size usually sells in the $20,000 range.

15. Richard Hainsworth

Note

Richard Hainsworth focuses on the meeting of two worlds – land V Sea. They examine the clash and unity of where the two meet, at the ocean’s edge. This edge, intense and highly volatile, is in a constant cycle, a struggle between that of erosion, destruction and renewal.

Richard is an active painter today, but has left the Newcastle region.

Note

Friend was working with Russell Drysdale at Hill End near Bathurst at the time this painting was being produced, the Drysdale influence being evident. The painting is a fine example of the earlier period of the artist who became more prominent when he painted subjects from Bali, Indonesia.

The painting was represented in the 1990 Retrospective of Donald Friend at the Art Gallery of NSW. Friend’s artworks are represented in most State Galleries and institutions.

The surviving Antipodean artist, Charles is acknowledged foremost for his “Alice Series’ major paintings selling for $600,000 and above and some over $1,000,000.

This painting is from a valuable period i.e. the 1960’s. Represented in all major collections nationally, the artist has had many publications produced and more recently his first wife Barbara Blackman was interviewed by Geraldine Doogue for the ABC television series ‘Compass’. The painting was owned by ‘Sportscraft’ a Melbourne corporate collection for years and is now owned privately.

Willebrant has exhibited at Cooks Hill Galleries since 1978. His first major works to be collected in Newcastle include the NBN Television collection and Lingard Hospital. His stylised surreal forms and subjects make his paintings easy to recognise. This subject was commissioned by a local coal company which was subsequently used for an edition of prints. The edition is sold out now.

This work has a fine overseas provenance, thereafter a corporate and private collection. The War Memorial Museum in Canberra have the largest holdings of the ‘Gallipoli’ series. This Nolan is rare, because it is in private hands. A major work produced during the collectable period, of the late 1950’s, will later this year be on loan to the Newcastle Region Gallery for display in conjunction with other Nolan works.

An icon in Australian art circles, his artworks are represented in all State Galleries. He has won extensive art prizes in his career including the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery NSW. As a past trustee of the AGNSW for years Rees was genuinely loved by the art establishment, a true gentleman.

This work was inspired from near his beach house on the South Coast of NSW, this being a favoured location for the artist to paint. The famous painting ‘Road to Berry’ by Rees was inspired from this region also.

This painting was inspired from his house/studio in Ubud, Bali. It captures the spider like workers repairing the roof to his home. The genuine love of his home is conveyed within this subject with a spontaneous light filtering from the outside. This is only one of two works I have seen with this subject.

Friend is well represented in State Galleries in Australia and has had survey exhibitions at the Art Gallery of NSW in the past, they also have a large holding of his work in their collection.

Note

Brian had an association with Newcastle in the fact he taught at the Newcastle Technical College in Hunter Street during the 1960-70’s. A noted watercolourist he was a member of the Australian Watercolur Institute and was a contemporary of Fred Bates-past president and a member of the RAS.

Brian was a full time teacher at Liverpool Technical College after he left Newcastle. His control of the watercolur medium continues to be admired by viewers.

This is an early oil painting of the artist, perhaps from his time in the Kimberley Ranges W.A.This period is recognised by the rich and intense colouring. Often paintings from this era exhibit a 'doing thing' in this instance the boy is playing the harmonica. I would regard this painting as a 'gem' it radiates interest, colour and is contained in its size.
