Note
Friend was working with Russell Drysdale at Hill End near Bathurst at the time this painting was being produced, the Drysdale influence being evident. The painting is a fine example of the earlier period of the artist who became more prominent when he painted subjects from Bali, Indonesia.
The painting was represented in the 1990 Retrospective of Donald Friend at the Art Gallery of NSW. Friend’s artworks are represented in most State Galleries and institutions.

Represented in all major collections nationally, the artist has had many publications produced and more recently his first wife Barbara Blackman was interviewed by Geraldine Doogue for the ABC television series ‘Compass’. Willebrant has exhibited at Cooks Hill Galleries since 1978. His first major works to be collected in Newcastle include the NBN Television collection and Lingard Hospital. His stylised surreal forms and subjects make his paintings easy to recognise. This subject was commissioned by a local coal company which was subsequently used for an edition of prints. The edition is sold out now.

This work was inspired from near his beach house on the South Coast of NSW, this being a favoured location for the artist to paint. The famous painting ‘Road to Berry’ by Rees was inspired from this region also.

This painting was inspired from his house/studio in Ubud, Bali. It captures the spider like workers repairing the roof to his home. The genuine love of his home is conveyed within this subject with a spontaneous light filtering from the outside. This is only one of two works I have seen with this subject.
Friend is well represented in State Galleries in Australia and has had survey exhibitions at the Art Gallery of NSW in the past, they also have a large holding of his work in their collection.

Note
Brian had an association with Newcastle in the fact he taught at the Newcastle Technical College in Hunter Street during the 1960-70’s. A noted watercolourist he was a member of the Australian Watercolur Institute and was a contemporary of Fred Bates-past president and a member of the RAS.
Brian was a full time teacher at Liverpool Technical College after he left Newcastle. His control of the watercolur medium continues to be admired by viewers.
