GOSSAMER - SKETCHING IN SPACE.
A SERIES DEVELOPED AROUND THE NOTION OF DREAM CATCHERS
COL HENRY 2008
Col Henry is a sculptor with experience spanning nearly four decades, and has made a significant contribution to the development of Sculpture in Australian. He is represented by several Public Sculptures and countless Private Collections in Australia and overseas.
He has pioneered an original, groundbreaking technique, resulting in a revolutionary and ultra-modern group of art works, which marry the resilience of steel to the fragility of glass. These avant-guarde works explore the genre of figurative sculpture, where the spacial relationships take on a greater importance than the positive surfaces of the works. Col Henry describes the process as ‘Drawing in Space’.
Col Henry has been recognised as an innovator, not an imitator, and his unique work has developed over 40 years of dedication to his art.
His “GOSSAMER SERIES” involves physically sketching in space, creating shadow sculptures, using his ‘Colcast and Pure Glass’ and Steel and Stainless Steel, to create complex three-dimensional forms, a matrix that is formal, as well as conceptual, and always elegant. There is a rhythm that is meditative and engaging, but the works are not purely visual, they are also metaphors for imagination and creativity. Subtle variations in the patterns suggest organic references and there is a definite order, no matter how chaotic it may seem.

The illusion and allusion is made stronger through the narrative of ambiguity and the viewer should negotiate their own meaning of the intriguing elements.
His practice is characterized by conceptual agility, inventiveness, knowledge of the language of sculpture, and his poetic, romantic and elegant associations. He is concerned with the energy of form in relation to the space in which it interacts, remaining true to the materials, while reflecting on the natural environment.
Openness to natural forms and the celebration of the possibilities inherent in the material, suffuse his work with organic and sensuous references. His vocabulary of form and motif, allude to the rhythms in nature. The works recall primal totems and monumental columns, devotional objects, sea creatures and seedpods, the movements of water and wind, archaic instruments, features of the landscape, and the human form. Bringing together all the elements, and fusing references to past, present and future, enables morphology of space in which form, process, material and sculpture converge.
Col Henry has studied for many years in pursuit of his artistic endeavor, including related Degrees, Diplomas and countless Certificates and short courses. He has been collected in Australia and Overseas in many Private Collections. Over the past 30 years he has been commissioned many times to place Sculpture and Sculptural Features in Public areas. The most recent is three large, groups of sculptures in a public park on the Gold Coast of Queensland. He is also regularly involved in many forms of artistic endeavor, including helping community groups and many of the local schools to achieve excellence in art and art awareness.

GOSSAMER SCULPTURES
LOOKING AFTER YOUR SCULPTURE.
These sculptures are made from a material Col Henry has developed over many years. He calls it
‘Colcast and Pure Glass”. The material is made of the highest quality resins, and pure glass reinforcing, and has additives to make it more flexible, UV resistant and mould resistant. The material looks fragile but is very strong and flexible considering the size of the strands.
Part of the enigmatic and ethereal quality of the sculptures comes from the apparent fragile nature of the medium used to make these unique sculptures.
It is important to note that they can be broken if they are mistreated like any valuable ceramic or glass sculpture.
MAITAINANCE
They are capable of being left outside and will not break down or deteriorate. Over time they do patina to a slightly more ivory colour. They generally need no maintenance.
REPAIRS
If the sculpture is mistreated, and some strands break, they can be repaired by carefully rejoining the fracture or break with “ Locktite 406 instant adhesive”, a very high quality type of clear superglue. Important - read the safety instructions before using this product. It is important to fit the join together as neatly as possible.
TRANSPORT
Gossamer is delicate, and needs to be transported carefully. The best method is to wrap the sculpture tightly with many, many layers of Gladwrap 10 to 15 wraps would do the trick. The sculpture can also be supported with cardboard bent to the shape of the sculpture and once again wrapped with more Galdwrap. This give the sculpture good general strength.
The wrapped sculpture could be easily place in a car, or if it is being transported by courier, it is suggested that the wrapped sculpture be bubble wrapped and placed in a cardboard box that has been modified to contain the particular shape of the sculpture. DO NOT FORGET TO LABEL THE PACKAGE “VERY FRAGILE”.
If advice is needed on any of the above points, please contact Col Henry
