Georgina Elms | Kimberley Series 2010

Artist Statement

“I pursue the William Morris ethic - the craftsman conceives, designs and makes the whole object - a total design concept - and follow the maxim“ simplicity requires perfection”.

Throughout my 37 years of potting, the ceramics of Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and the Orient have inspired my throwing style, whilst a Churchill Fellowship (1988) allowed detailed research into the 16th and 17th Century Iznik pottery with its brightly coloured floral designs. My subsequent ceramic work draws upon spectacular flora of Australia - initially cast in sterling silver in combination with matt black, wheel-thrown, often carved,  black-fired and subsequently high-fired porcelain.

Parallel to experimentation with etching fine bone china, I developed a “cloisonné” technique on high-fired porcelain, inlaying brilliantly coloured slips depicting the true colours of Australian flora.

Exposure to the Old Imari ware, Nabeshima ware (Japan  with floral designs and use of red, yellow and blue overglaze enamels, coupled with firsthand observations of Jingdezhen porcelain (Shanghai 2005), has inspired continued refinement of form and
decorative technique.
