Greg Hansell | Quiet

Artist Statement

This collection is about ‘quiet’. It maybe an old terrace wall full of patina and texture in ‘Susannah Place’ (represented in Dobell Drawing Prize, Art Gallery NSW 2010) or still life and rural landscapes.

Most of the work is drawn using earth pastels, made only using crushed rocks and clays. No extra colour or binder is used in their manufacture.

Some small works are painted using Schmincke pastel. The colour is quite vibrant, as in the ‘Cons Boat, Lavender Bay’- Sydney Harbour.

Directors Statement

Greg’s pastel are unique, capturing the subtle tonal qualities or weathering and ageing of man made materials; namely iron, wood, metals. There is a fascination with the deterioration of the material morphing its colour, composition and texture. Greg appreciates this changing of the nature of the material! He understands what time does to the surface of the materials, a mellowing and graceful patination. Much of the effect is pure understatement, something the artist thrives upon. Greg has been a regular exhibitor in the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW, Winning the Trustees watercolour prize on numerous occasions and The Dobell Art Prize.
