COOKS HILL GALLERIES EXHIBITION 2003 - HARRY PIDGEON "INSIGHT OUT"

5th generation Australian, Harry Pidgeon, with 24 solo or feature artist exhibitions, has established himself as an artist with a unique capacity to engage us through the ‘looking glass of nature’. The environment is always the catalyst for his work and in this latest exhibition he achieves an even more sweeping, and alternatively more intimate perspective on nature and the landscape.

Observing nature began very early for Harry who grew up in the lush countryside of the New England tablelands. It was not just that he started to paint as soon as he could hold a brush, but that there were special places in the landscape which he felt drawn to: high mountains, deep ravines, rugged granite gorges. On many occasions he’d later discover that these were the exact same place that had once been a sacred aboriginal meeting place. Here he not only explored, climbed and canoed its many rugged gorges and rivers but was painting them. The particular ‘overview’ projection in many of Harry’s concepts is a probable extension of this time.

A graduate of the National Art School in Sydney Harry spent the first 12 years of his career working as an art director in the J. Walter Thompson Company and in his own graphic design consultancy. His work in print, television and film media has been used nationally and internationally for clients including, Qantas, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, FNCB-Waltons, Union Carbide, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Norco, Kellogs and The Red Cross.

In 1980 Harry made painting his full time career. In the first 5 years he gained more than 50 art awards in Sydney, Brisbane and regional centres. With a growing reputation Harry subsequently concentrated more and more on solo and feature exhibitions. To date he has held 24 solo or feature artist exhibitions whilst also appearing in numerous group exhibitions.
