These key works were the precursors to the artist’s famous Alice in Wonderland series created in 1956-57. Sell-out shows continued in Australia during the 1960s and 1970s culminating in Charles Blackman being awarded the OBE and Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal. In later years he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his services to the arts by Sydney University. Charles Blackman’s works are in all major Australian galleries and museums as well as in international collections. In 1993 Blackman’s important contribution to Australian art was acknowledged with an extraordinary retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria and toured around Australia. The artist’s unique vision explores the emotive and intuitive. Through these devices Blackman has produced powerful images dealing with childhood, femininity and domesticity. This year the National Gallery of Victoria is honoring the artist by celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of his creation of the Alice in Wonderland series. After a career spanning more than five decades Charles Blackman is now ranked as one of Australia’s most important artists in Australian 20th-century art.
