Boat Crew.
Size. 91/122 cm.
Media, Acrylic on Canvas
I enjoyed the challenge of painting this particular work. It is very difficult to find references for this type of subject even though the image itself is very common if not clichéd. I would like to do more work of this kind.

Dawn Arrival.
Size. 102/76.5 cm.
Media. Acrylic & Oil On Canvas.
I live in the inner city of Newcastle & regularly walk my dogs along the harbour foreshore early in the mornings. The image seen in this work is truly a backdrop to my life. On this particular morning there had been bushfires around the coast & the smoke in the otherwise clear morning air made the sunrise golden. The only movement was the distant ship entering the port.

Full Moon Rising.
Size 76/51 cm.
Media. Oil On Canvas.
I have played God a little with this painting. The moon is never in the position show in this work. One of the joys of being an artist is that you can change the world to suit your needs. I wanted to convey the feeling of melon coly that hangs over a place that is better known for the fun & warmth of summer days, once the sun has set & the air turns cold. This can be a meter for so many things in life.

Redhead Bluff From Burwood Beach.
Size. 51/33 cm.
Media. Oil On Board.
Some friends & I had spent a morning doing some life drawing from a model on the rocks close to this spot. I also did a drawing of this view, which I latter developed into this painting. There is a wide shallow rock shelf here, which creates marvellous patterns in the water as the tide runs across it.

Reflections.
Size. 51/76 cm.
Media. Oil On Canvas.
This is one of the few paintings that I have done totally from memory .I had been down on the beach one very wet winter afternoon just as the 5 o’clock traffic was coming down Scenic Drive. Their lights were on & so ware the streetlights. As I was watching this scene a small aircraft came over Shepherds Hill with its navigation lights on. The air was full of sea mist & light rain, & there was a short moment between waves when the moist sand glittered with these splashes of light. Some time latter I attempted to capture the moment.

Sailors Rock.
Size 40/30 cm.
Media. Oil on Canvas.
My mother told me that when she was young she used to often sit on this large rock that she called “Sailors Rock”. As I can only think of her as someone who is terrified of the water & I have no memory of her ever entering the surf; I can only think that she must have any gone to the beach at low tide.

The Sleeping Woman.
Size. 40/30 cm.
Medium. Acrylic on Canvas.
This work was intended to be a preliminary study for a larger painting in oil. However it worked so well as a small picture that I felt captured the mood that I was after that I carried it through to a more finished, though still raw state. It was the rhythm of the hair that drew me to this image; it seemed to express the langue of a hot summer afternoon.

Standing Nude. (Rear view No1).
Size. 76/30 cm.
Media. Acrylic & Oil on Canvas.
I had wanted to paint a traditional subject using one of the most ancient mediums; egg tempora. The technique used to paint in this medium is a hatching stroke; not unlike using a pensile. However I found out to my amassment that using this ancient medium has dangers that were not mentioned in the many books & articles that I had read on the subject. To uses this technique one must use a traditional rabbit skin glue ground & the paint pigment is bound with egg yoke. My dog ate the pot of rabbit skin glue before I could use it. When I finally started the painting, I found that overnight the cockroaches had eaten it. So I redid the work in the hatching technique but using acrylic & oil instead .

Sunset Winda Woppa.
Size. 40/30 cm.
Media. Oil on Canvas.
This work was done following a trip to Tea Gardens. It was a still winters evening just on sunset. Very calm, very still with the chill just beginning, One of those perfect winter days when you can wear shorts & a T-shirt all day but you quickly need the jumper & tacky daks once the sun goes down.

Swimming Into The Chop.
Size. 76/51 cm.
Media. Oil On Canvas.
The sun is not yet up. It dawn at the Merewether bath. You can tell by the choppy water that a southerly blow is on the way. The water will be warmer that the air temperature but you will have to take care as you swim to avoid getting a lung full of water as the weather deteriorates & the chop gets bigger.

Terra Incognita.
Size. 80/122 cm.
Media. Oil on Canvas.
I had been looking at some areal photos of the Out Back when I was struck by how similar they were to areas of sand & rocks on the beach. This image is of a small rock pool on Dudley beach .I was fascinated by the complex patterns. This pool is only a fraction of the size of this painting; & yet is as intricate as any vast landscape.

I was taken by the whimsy of this young woman’s face. The beauty enhanced by the crooked smile. What is she thinking?

Silent Moon.
Size. 40/30 cm
Medium. Oil on Board.
This image is of the rocky area next to the Ladies Pool at Merewether Beach. Some of my earliest memories are of this place, were as a child I was regularly brought to swim & play. This painting shows a view over the rocks towards the area of water were in the late 1940’s a young lifesaver Frank (Togo) Oclitch was taken by a shark. My mother was on the beach when he was killed & I was often told the store of the tragedy. By day the area is usually bright & full of life; but at night, when the moon is full & the beach is empty the place seems to have a brooding melancholy feel.
