RICK EVERINGHAM CATALOGUE
ALL WORKS OIL ON CANVAS/BOARD
Friday May 30 - June 23, 2003
"REFLECTIONS & MEMORIES"
Since the beginning of my painting career I have been fascinated by the challenge of painting water. Each exhibition has contained some work which touched on water and reflections in some way. It is not all water, nor all reflections that I find interesting, but a very particular quality of 'liquidity' that I like to paint.
My early water paintings were of backwaters and small creeks with fishing boats. These gave way to many years of painting kits in water, and a large series of beaches and sand hills from Fraser Island, and other islands near Brisbane.
When I began to paint Italy in 1991 I discovered the delights of Venice and Portofino, as well as many other watery places. I have continued to draw on these places time and time again, finding ever more ways of interpreting their treasures.
This is the first exhibition in which I have concentrated solely on water as a main theme. It consists of subjects from Italy, continuing my affair with Venice and Portofino, but introducing some new reflections of various types, not necessarily in water, and also revisiting some of my old remembered watery subjects from Australia.

PAINTING STYLE
Rick Everingham is one of Queensland's leading contemporary representational painters. Working in oils, he was best known in the past for his urban landscapes and his sensitive and subtle figurative paintings of children. Since 1991 his subject matter has been drawn almost exclusively from the central regions of Italy. Now working from his studio in Tuscany, this Italian series is continuing, but the Mediterranean theme has been widened with the addition of paintings from the Greek Islands and France.
This year the theme of “water” is predominate in my work; whether that be a “wet day”, a “fountain”, a seascape at Portofino,a river. In some cases I have revisited
past themes, especially within Australia; Moreton & Stradbroke Islands off the Brisbane coast is featured as with some of Brisbane’s urban scenes.

ARTIST'S COMMENT
I have a very simple philosophy. Our society seems intent on expressing ever increasing numbers of disturbing images. I like to create paintings which remind me that simple beauty is still there, and wherever I choose to find it.
We tend to forget that it is possible to view life in a way that makes it positive and full of joy. I believe the world is a truly magical place where all things are somehow connected. My paintings are my experience of that connection.
I view the whole process of life as a journey. When my children were young, their activities were once central to my work. Now they are independent my work has changed. My wife and I love to travel, so we seek out interesting places in the world, and I paint the experience.
Italy has an overall patina that I find irresistible, a wonderful zest for life and immense cultural heritage. It has qualities for me that I can only explain as some sort of soul connection.
The process is simple. Wherever I go I find certain images, situations, and subtleties of colours that strongly appeal to me. They seem to resonate with some personal harmonic that produces a special feeling that insists on being expressed.
The aim of my painting is simply to communicate these feelings to others as clearly as possible.Recentl I have revisited themes from the past especially within Australia. Moreton & Stradbroke Islands off the Brisbane coast is featured as with some of the urban Brisbane scenes. Figures in landscape feature.
