Styles: EXPRESSIONIST Blackman studied at the East Sydney Technical College, 1943-46. He worked as an artist for the Sydney Sun before going to Melbourne where he worked as a cook and practised his art when he could. He exhibited with the reformed Contemporary Art Society and his reputation began to grow. The 1960 Helena Rubenstein Scholarship allowed him to travel and study overseas. By 1977, an OBE was conferred on him for services to art. The major retrospective Schoolgirls and Angels, which toured in 1993, confirmed this artist's substantial contribution to Australian art.
